Korean instant ramen and gimbap picnic at Banpo Hangang Park in Seoul

Eating instant ramen beside the Han River is one of Seoul’s most popular casual outdoor experiences. Known as Hangang ramyeon (한강라면), it involves buying instant noodles from a riverside convenience store, cooking them in a special ramen machine, and enjoying them outdoors.

But there’s more to a successful Han River picnic than simply buying ramen.

Where should you go? How do you use the machine? Can you rent a picnic mat? What happens to leftover ramen broth? And how do you return your rented equipment?

I visited Banpo Hangang Park in October 2026 to document the experience firsthand.

This guide walks you through the process, from getting to the park and renting picnic equipment to cooking ramen, relaxing by the river, and cleaning up afterward.

1. Where to Try Han River Ramen in Seoul

Autumn picnic lawns and paved cycling paths at Banpo Hangang Park in Seoul

Han River ramen is available at several riverside convenience stores in Seoul. You don’t have to visit Banpo specifically to try it.

However, Banpo Hangang Park is an excellent choice if you want to turn a simple bowl of noodles into a longer outdoor experience.

The park offers open grassy areas, riverside paths, and access to landmarks such as Banpo Bridge and Sebitseom.

For this guide, I used the ramen cooking facilities at:

Banpo Hangang Park is large, so it’s helpful to save the specific convenience store in your map app rather than navigating only to the park’s general location.

Search the Korean store name in Naver Map for directions.

How to Get to Banpo Hangang Park

You don’t need a car to visit.

By subway

Express Bus Terminal Station (Lines 3, 7, and 9) and Sinbanpo Station (Line 9) are useful starting points for reaching the park on foot.

Pedestrian access routes connect the surrounding neighborhoods to the riverside, although the walk to the convenience store may be longer than the walk to the park entrance.

Use Naver Map to check the best route from your accommodation to the specific store.

By taxi

A taxi can be convenient if you’re carrying picnic supplies or traveling with young children. Choose a drop-off point near your intended part of the park and follow pedestrian directions from there.

By car

Parking is available in designated park parking areas. Availability can be limited during busy weekends and special events.

2. Rent a Picnic Mat Before Buying Your Food

A sign outside the convenience store directs visitors to the second-floor picnic mat, blanket, and table rental service.

One of the most useful things I discovered during my visit was the picnic rental service inside the convenience store building.

You don’t necessarily need to bring your own picnic mat.

During my October 2026 visit, the second floor offered mats, blankets, and small tables for rent.

Two-item combination₩12,000₩10,000
Three-item combination₩16,000₩10,000

These prices were displayed during my October 2026 visit and may change.

The posted instructions also stated:

  • Payment by card only.
  • Return rented equipment by 9:30 p.m.
  • Keep your receipt and payment card for the return process.
  • Deposits are refunded through cancellation of the relevant card authorization.

For a casual picnic, a mat is usually sufficient. On cooler days, consider adding a blanket.

A small table can also be useful if you’re planning to eat several dishes or spend a few hours at the park.

3. Find Your Picnic Spot and Settle In

Visitors enjoying picnics on the grassy lawn at Banpo Hangang Park in Seoul, with picnic mats, small shade tents, and autumn trees.

After renting your equipment, walk around and choose a comfortable spot.

I recommend looking for a place with some shade, particularly on bright afternoons.

Spread out your mat, organize your belongings, and get comfortable before returning to the convenience store for food.

It’s common to see people leave inexpensive picnic equipment at their spots while they briefly visit the store. However, never leave valuables unattended. Take your phone, wallet, passport, and other important items with you.

Are Tents Allowed at Banpo Hangang Park?

Small shade tents are allowed only in designated areas and during permitted operating periods.

Rules may specify tent size, location, operating hours, and whether the sides must remain open.

Picnic mats are a simpler option if you don’t want to worry about tent regulations.

Always check the current park signs and official Seoul Hangang Park guidance before setting up a tent.

For the latest information on picnic regulations, park facilities, and visitor notices, check the official Seoul Hangang Parks website before your visit.

4. Buy Your Ramen and Picnic Snacks

Once your picnic spot is ready, head back to the convenience store.

You’ll find a wide selection of Korean instant noodles, snacks, drinks, and ice cream.

Choose your ramen based on your spice preference. Some Korean instant noodles are quite spicy, so look carefully at the packaging if you prefer something mild.

What Should You Eat With Han River Ramen?

You can enjoy ramen on its own, but adding a few snacks makes the picnic more satisfying.

Gimbap (김밥), Korean rice rolls filled with vegetables and other ingredients, is one of my favorite pairings.

For this visit, I brought takeaway gimbap from Friend’s (후랜드), a long-established neighborhood shop in Apgujeong.

You don’t need to make a special trip to Apgujeong, though. Picking up gimbap near your hotel or on the way to the park works just as well.

Other convenient picnic foods include fruit, chips, drinks, and ice cream.

Practical tip: Shopping bags are sold separately at Korean convenience stores. Buy one if needed, then reuse it to collect your trash before leaving.

5. How to Cook Han River Ramen

The ramen cooking machine may look unfamiliar if you’re visiting Korea for the first time, but the process is straightforward.

It automatically dispenses hot water and cooks the noodles using a preset cooking program.

Here’s how to use it.

Step 1: Buy Your Ramen

Choose your instant noodle packet and pay at the convenience store.

Use the designated cooking container provided for the machine.

Step 2: Add the Noodles and Seasoning

Open the packet and place the noodles and seasoning into the container.

Check the package instructions if your ramen includes separate sauces or toppings.

Step 3: Place the Container on the Machine

Set the container on the designated cooking surface.

Be careful not to touch the heating area.

Step 4: Select the Ramen Type

The machine I used offered three settings:

  • Regular: Standard instant ramen
  • Thick: Thicker noodles
  • Stir-fried: Stir-fried or sauce-style noodles

Select the setting that matches your ramen.

Step 5: Press Start

Press the start button.

The machine automatically adds water and starts the cooking process. Wait for the timer or completion signal.

Step 6: Add an Egg if Desired

At this particular machine, the posted instructions recommended adding an egg when approximately one minute of cooking time remained, then stirring.

Follow the machine’s instructions rather than assuming every ramen cooker operates identically.

Step 7: Carry Your Ramen Carefully

When cooking is complete, remove the container carefully and take your ramen back to your picnic spot.

Safety tip: The container and broth can be extremely hot. If you’re visiting with children, an adult should operate the machine and carry the finished ramen.

6. Enjoy Your Han River Picnic

Now comes the best part.

Sit down, open your gimbap, and enjoy your ramen while it’s hot.

The food itself is simple, but the setting makes it special.

During my visit, people were enjoying the park in all kinds of ways. Some were jogging or cycling, while others were reading books, watching videos, sharing meals, or taking an afternoon nap.

Despite all the activity, the atmosphere felt remarkably peaceful.

That’s part of the appeal of Banpo Hangang Park. You don’t have to follow a packed sightseeing schedule to enjoy Seoul.

Sometimes, spending an afternoon outdoors is the experience.

7. Where to Dispose of Leftover Ramen Broth

After eating, don’t pour leftover ramen soup onto the grass or into a regular trash bin.

Take your container back to the convenience store building and use the designated liquid-waste disposal facilities.

Follow the signs for separating food waste, recyclables, and general trash.

Local Tip: Stop for Ice Cream on the Way Back

Before returning to your picnic mat, consider buying an ice cream or cold drink.

On my visit, I picked up Ppongtta (뽕따), a popular Korean ice pop.

It was a simple way to extend the picnic after lunch.

You might come for the ramen, but there’s no reason to leave immediately after finishing it.

Take some time to enjoy the fresh air and the view.

8. Return Your Picnic Equipment Before Leaving

When you’re ready to go, gather your belongings and pack up your picnic area.

The cleanup process is simple:

  1. Collect your trash, using the shopping bag you purchased earlier if necessary.
  2. Fold your rented mat and blanket.
  3. Return to the convenience store building.
  4. Dispose of your waste in the designated first-floor bins, following the posted sorting instructions.
  5. Go upstairs to the second-floor rental counter.
  6. Return your equipment and complete the deposit refund process.

Remember to keep your receipt and payment card until the rental return is complete.

The rental sign displayed a 9:30 p.m. return deadline during my October 2026 visit. Confirm the current deadline when renting.

9. More Things to Do at Banpo Hangang Park

A Han River ramen picnic is enjoyable on its own, but you can easily turn it into a longer afternoon.

Walk or Cycle Along the River

Banpo has paths for walking and cycling, making it easy to explore the riverside before or after your meal.

Be mindful of designated cycling lanes, especially when visiting with children.

Explore the Park’s Open Spaces

Families can enjoy the open spaces and outdoor recreational areas.

Some water features and play facilities operate seasonally, so availability depends on when you visit.

Look Out for the Park Shuttle

During my visit, I spotted a small, brightly decorated shuttle vehicle moving through the park.

If you’d like to use a park shuttle service, check its current route, operating dates, and boarding information on-site. Don’t assume that every shuttle runs daily or serves the entire park.

Visit the Sebitseom Area

Sebitseom is a floating island complex near Banpo Bridge and one of the park’s most recognizable landmarks.

It’s worth exploring if you have extra time, especially for riverside photographs.

Check the Banpo Bridge Rainbow Fountain Schedule

Banpo Bridge’s Moonlight Rainbow Fountain is a popular attraction, but performances are seasonal and weather-dependent.

Check the latest official schedule before visiting specifically for a fountain show.

Look for Special Events at Jamsugyo

The nearby Jamsugyo area sometimes hosts pedestrian festivals, food trucks, and cultural activities.

These events can make the park livelier, but schedules vary by season.

Check the official Seoul Hangang Park website for current event information.

10. Is Banpo Hangang Park Good for Families?

Families relaxing on grassy lawns beside paved paths and autumn trees at Banpo Hangang Park in Seoul.

Banpo is a good choice for families who want an easy outdoor activity without committing to a full day of sightseeing.

Its open areas and paved paths are particularly useful for families with children who enjoy scooters or bicycles.

A few practical tips:

  • Choose a picnic spot away from busy bike lanes.
  • Keep children supervised near the river.
  • Bring sunscreen and water.
  • Have an adult handle hot ramen containers.
  • Check seasonal facility availability in advance.

If you’re comparing Banpo and Jamwon Hangang Park, both are enjoyable riverside destinations.

From my experience visiting both, Banpo is particularly appealing for a longer family picnic involving open lawns, paved paths, and nearby attractions.
